State-of-the-art laboratories

The University of Sunderland’s science facilities are currently undergoing a major overhaul which will provide state-of-the-art laboratories, research facilities and a ‘living lab’ consisting of a hospital training ward, point of care centre, a high-fidelity simulation suite, examination rooms, a pharmacy, together with teaching hubs, training rooms, seminar rooms and staff offices.

Birley was awarded the contract to supply and manufacture the Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment (FF&E) for 14 laboratories within the Fleming Level 1 of the science complex.

The majority of the fitted lab furniture was supplied with Trespa Toplab solid grade laminate tops, supported on heavy duty steel frames, providing the University with an economical and chemical resistant solution.

Under bench storage and unit options equated to approximately 250 drawers and cupboards being supplied, each fitted with wheels to allow for flexibility of movement.

In addition, a number of fume cupboards, chemical cabinets, storage racking and anti-vibration tables were supplied throughout the science complex.
