Action not words
Birley is determined to make a positive contribution to the communities in which we operate, to our employees, to our business partners, and to society in general.
All of our wood is sourced from companies that are accredited by either Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).
Birley was the first company in the sector to be accredited under BS EN ISO 14001: 2015 environmental accreditation. We are certified by the British Standards Institution.
Zero to Landfill
All paper and card is recycled. Birley makes notepads from the blank sides of non-confidential paper waste and has all general non-recyclable waste sent to a specialist energy recovery facility, where waste is incinerated to provide heat energy to buildings in Sheffield City Centre.
Any metal waste is recycled through a scrap metal merchant, whilst a third party deals with hazardous waste, such as oils, solvents and paint packaging, recycling as much as is possible.
The Carbon Trust
In addition to all of the above we have been working with the Carbon Trust to reduce our CO² emissions, using sustainably sourced materials and water, not solvent-based lacquers.
Investors in People
Birley is also an Investors in People company. Over the last few years the company has made some significant changes to recruitment and staff development, as well as implementing new policies that focus on internal promotion ahead of external recruitment.
At core of the company’s accreditation is our apprenticeship scheme, that focuses on a yearly intake of joinery and engineering apprentices. This programme is the life blood to the long term operation and success of Birley and trains the apprentices across all areas of our joinery and metals manufacturing process including polishing, spraying, fabrication, machining, assembly and despatch.
Working with charities
With the support of its employees, Birley continues to hold fundraising events for our chosen charities, which include Bluebell Woods Children’s Hospice, Children in Need and Thornberry Animal Sanctuary.
Over the last few years’ individual employees have gone the extra mile and have taken part in sponsored runs, hikes and in late 2016 our Financial Controller cycled across Vietnam and Cambodia in support of Women V Cancer.
We provide waste offcuts of wood to local schools and charities for use in their craft and design departments.
